Umbridge and other things
Isn’t Umbridge (I hate her so much that’s all I’m calling her) one of the most horrible characters ever? I can’t remember ever hating a written character quite so much. It’s not even that she’s evil - I don’t mind You-Know-Who as much. What is it? She’s…… eeeugh!
And I just got to the bit about finding the Room of Requirement and is anyone else as impressed as I am that there’s a lead up to that in book 4? It’s not even as if it had to have a lead - JK so planned this whole thing out ![]()

Umbridge–I think what makes me dislike her so much is that she seems to take such a perverse pleasure in torturing Harry. With Voldemort you know what you’re gonna get, but with her. . .she’s got this somewhat benign exterior that masks a true monster. I can’t stand what she does to Harry in detention; it makes me sick every time I read it.
Umbridge is certainly a nasty piece of work, isn’t she? Shudder.
Love that Room of Requirement. I wonder if it would work for knitting projects?
Just finished the book at lunch today. It is *so* hard not to pick up book 6!!! Day after tomorrow. At least I don’t have to wait long.
Yeah, it is the pleasure Umbridge takes in the cruelty that makes her so horrid.
And JK is amazing. There are so many little things in the stories that you don’t even notice when you read them. But several books later that little throwaway comment suddenly takes on new importance.
She is awful - reminds me of a guidance counselor I had in High School who also looked like a frog and was evil. The one that told me to quit when I was preggers with my daughter because ‘it would be to much for me’ (in other words, too expensive for the school to carry insurance. I didn’t quit). Just awful.
